RUBEM BRAGA

Nascido em Cachoeiro do Itapemirim/ES, em 12 de janeiro de 1913, foi cronista, repórter, editorialista, poeta, tradutor e crítico de artes plásticas. Fez seus primeiros estudos na cidade natal, onde escreve para o jornalzinho “O Itapemirim”.

Inicia-se no jornalismo profissional ainda estudante, fazendo reportagens e assinando crônicas diárias no jornal “Diário da Tarde”. Forma-se bacharel pela Faculdade de Direito de Belo Horizonte em 1932, mas não exerce a profissão. Neste mesmo ano, cobre a Revolução Constitucionalista deflagrada em São Paulo, na qual chega a ser preso. Transferindo-se para Recife/PE, dirige a página de crônicas policiais no “Diário de Pernambuco”. Nesta cidade funda o periódico “Folha do Povo”. Em 1936 lança seu primeiro livro de crônicas “O Conde e o Passarinho” e funda em São Paulo a revista “Problemas”, além de outras.

Rubem Braga faz diversas viagens ao exterior, onde desempenha função diplomática e atua como correspon­dente em jornais brasileiros. Após seu regresso, exerce o jornalismo em várias cidades do País, fixando domicílio no Rio de Janeiro, onde escreve crônicas e críticas literárias para o “Jornal Hoje”, da Rede Globo de Televisão. Sua vida como jornalista registra a colaboração em inúmeros perió­dicos além da participação em várias antologias, entre elas a “Antologia dos Poetas Contemporâneos”.

Desde que surge para a literatura, na década de 30, o “Sabiá da Crônica”, como o chamava Stanislaw Ponte Preta, encanta o leitor brasileiro. Retratando com limpidez o complexo cotidiano do País, Rubem Braga dá à crônica brasileira uma nova dimensão que somente os grandes escritores sabem dar: a universalidade.

Rubem Braga faleceu na cidade do Rio de Janeiro/RJ, em 19 de dezembro de 1990.

RUBEM BRAGA

Born in Cachoeiro do Itapemirim/ES on January 12, 1913, chronicle writer, reporter, editor, poet, translator and plastic arts critic. Braga attended school in his home town where he wrote for the local newspaper “O Itapemirim”.

He started in the professional journalism very early, still as student doing newspaper reporting and signing daily chronicles for the newspaper “Diário da Tarde”. Graduated from the School of Law of Belo Horizonte in 1932, he did not go into practice. In this same year he covered the Constitucionalist Revolution that took place in São Paulo and during which he was arrested mistaken for a spy. Transferred to Recife/PE there he was in charge of the criminal chronicles column in the “Diário de Pernambuco”. In Recife he founded the periodical Folha do Povo”. In 1936 he launched his first chronicle book “O Conde e o Passarinho” and founded in São Paulo the magazine “Problemas”, among others.

Rubem Braga has travelled a lot to foreign countries where he has worked as diplomat and as correspondent of Brazilian journals. After coming back he worked as journalist in many cities in the country until; he decided to settled in Rio de Janeiro where he wrote chronicles and literary critics for the “Jornal Hoje”, of the Globo Network Television. His life as journalist registers his contributions to many periodicals besides his participation in several collections such as “Antologia dos Poetas Contemporâneos”.

Since his beginning in literature in the 30’s, the “Sabiá da Cronica” (the chronicle’s singing bird) as was called by Stanislaw Ponte Preta, has charmed the Brazilian reader.

Portraying with clarity the country’s daily chores, Rubem Braga gave to the Brazilian chronicle a new dimension that only to the great authors are able to do: the universality.

Rubem Braga died in Rio de Janeiro/RJ, on December 19, 1990.
