Sempre.

TRIBUTE TO THE BRAZILIAN CIRCUS

in this issue the Posts pay tribute to the Brazilian circus, focusing on the life of one of the greatest Brazilian clowns, Piolin, whose centenary of birth was in 1997. Also in 1997, the National School of Circus, founded in 1982, celebrated its 15 years. Thanks to this institution, youngsters of all social classes have the chance to learn the techniques and secrets of this millenarian art.

CLOWN PIOLIN

Son of Galdino Pinto and Clotilde Farnesi, Abelardo Pinto (so called Piolin) was born in Ribeirão Preto, State of São Paulo, on March 27th, 1987, at the Americano Circus, which was his father’s property.

Piolin, one of the dearest Brazilian clowns, was regarded by the intellectuals of the Modern Art Week, an artistic movement which took place in February 1922, as an example of genuine Brazilian popular artist. in Brazil, Circus Day is celebrated on his birthday.

Just like any other artist of a traditional circus family, young Abelardo learned acrobatics, cycling, contortionism, and studied music -he used to play the violin and the mandolin. His father’s circus had one of the best troupes ever.

Piolin inherits his father’s circus and, along with his nephews and sons, he keeps the “Circus Piolin”, at Paissandú square, in São Paulo, for more than 30 years.

The name Piolin came about in a charitable performance with Spanish artists. He was named “Piolin” (cord) for his being thin and having long legs.

He passed away in São Paulo, on September 4th 1973.

NATIONAL SCHOOL OF CIRCUS

Brazilian circus is currently strong and qualified. There are more than 2,000 circuses spread throughout our territory. Out of these, 80% are average or big sized ones, with trapeze, animals and great actors.

Presently, the schools and projects that teach circus techniques multiply around the country. Since the creation of the pioneer “Piolin” in 1980 in São Paulo, and afterwards, with the successful “National School of Circus” in Rio de Janeiro, founded in 1982, youngsters of all social classes have had the chance to learn the techniques and secrets of this millenarian art. After graduation, they go to circuses either in Brazil or abroad, or even gather in groups to perform at theaters, gyms and squares.

Modern and daring, they draw a new audience, young and urban, which likes rock and “capoeira” and crowds to see performances of groups such as the pioneer “Intrépida Trupe”; “Acrobáticos Fratelli”; “Aerodianas”; “Paraiapatôes, Patifes e Paspalhôes”; “Nau de Ícaros”; ‘Teatro de Anônimo’ “Irmãos Brothers” and many other troupes, which are yet to come onto the scene until the year 2000.

The circus lives and, just iike any other sort of life, it has always changed and it has always change anew.
