250 YEARS OF THE BIRTH OF JOSE BASILIO DA GAMA

José Basilio da Gama - whose name in the Roman Arcadia was Termindo Sipilio - was born in Tiradentes (then São José del Rei) on April 8, 1741 and died in Lisbon on July 31, 1795.

He studied with the Jesuits in Rio de Janeiro and when the School was closed by the government of Gomes Freire, he was already a novice in the Company. In 1768 he leaves Rio de Janeiro for Portugal to study in Coimbra but he is arrested in Lisbon under the accusation of being favourable to the jesuits. He is set free with the promise of going to Angola. He approaches the powerful Pombal, offering an Epithalamium to the Marquis’ daughter, through which he asks him to be released from the banishment. His request was listened to, and he begins to compose the “Uraguay” - a praise song to Pombal’s politics.

Besides the “Uraguay” he also published: “Declamação Trágica: Poema dedicado às Belas-artes” -1772; “Soneto ao Rei D. José I no dia da inauguração da sua estátua eqüestre” - 1775; “Os Campos Elísios” - 1776; “Lenitivo da Saudade na Morte do Sereníssimo Senhor D. José, Príncipe do Brasil” - 1788; and “Quitúbia” - 1791 (a praise song to a black kinglet).
