HOMENAGEM A J. CARLOS

Homage to J. Carlos

José Carlos de Brita e Cunha was born in Botafogo, a district of Rio de Janeiro, on June 18, 1884. He died in this same city on October 2, 1950.

J. Carlos is the quintessential caricaturist and is the top name of this art in our country in the firs half of this century. His vast production ranges from illustrations of texts, letters and alphabet, publicity, comics, charges, portrait-charges, caricatures, vignettes, magazine covers and children’s books, to script of theater plays. Complementing all this there was the always synthetic deep-philosophical-sense captions that besides raising a laugh would take the reader to reflections and development of a critic thought.

He has intensively worked in the press and had his works published in the main newspapers and magazines of his times, among them: "O Malho", "O Tico-tico", "Ilustrações Brasileiras", "Para Todos", "Fon-fon", "Careta", "O Tagarela" and "O Cruzeiro".

Today J. Carlos is a name of a Jardim Botânico Street, a bust on a pedestal in a public square in this same district, the name of a municipal school in Irajá. A medal has been made in his homage, a brooch in ceramics with the picture of "Melindrosa", and the city’s decoration of the carnival of 1970 was entirely based on his works.

J. Carlos has had an outstanding participation in events related to the contemporaneous humorous design in exhibitions such as: "Só Riso na Vila", "Centenário da República" and the "Centenário do Futebol" where he was cover of a catalogue. He was also honored with special rooms at the following humor exhibitions: "Salão Carioca de Humor 1988", "Salão de Humor de Juiz de Fora/MG 1989", "Salão de Humor de Maceió/AL 1989", "Salão de Humor do Recife/PE 1989", "I Encontro Brasil Portugal de Humor/Lisboa 1989", "Salão Internacional de Humor de Piracicaba/SP 1989", "I Salão Carioca Internacional de Humor/Rio 1991", "Encontro de Humor Brasil Costa Rica/San Jose 1991", Encontro de Humor Colômbia/ Bogotá 1992" and "Encontro de Humor Brasil Chile/ Santiago 1994".

The issue of a stamp honoring J. Carlos favors specially the rescuing of his memory creating the opportunity of contact with the new generations and the multiplication of his work through correspondence among men.
