Joaquim Nabuco was a politician and writer from Pernambuco (1849-1910). Joaquim Aurélio Barreto Nabuco do Araújo is one of the most important illustrations of the abolitionism and one of the creators of the modern Brazilian prose.

He was born in Recife and he entered the diplomatic career in 1876, being named adido for the Brazilian Legation in Washington (USA). In 1879 returned to Brazil, elected general deputy for Pernambuco. Main abolitionist parliamentary leader, defends the abolition of the slavery in the press, it provokes discussions in the society and he asks audience with the pope, in which Leão XIII declares its support to the campaign anti slavery. He travels through Europe 1881 to 1884, when it is chosen deputy again. It fights against the slavery until the abolition, in 1888.

Monarchist, with the proclamation of the Republic leaves the politics. In 1891 he helps to create the Jornal do Brasil, of which is editor-chief. Invited by the republican government, it is entrusted the Brazilian Embassy of several diplomatic missions and leadership in London and in Washington, where he died. As writer, stands out for its historical works, among them Balmaceda (1895) and A Statesman of the Empire (1897-1899). he Writes My autobiography Formation (1900), a classic of the Brazilian literature.

Joaquim Nabuco foi político e escritor pernambucano (1849-1910). Joaquim Aurélio Barreto Nabuco de Araújo é uma das figuras mais importantes do abolicionismo e um dos criadores da moderna prosa brasileira. Nasce no Recife e entra para a carreira diplomática em 1876, sendo nomeado adido para a Legação Brasileira em Washington (EUA). Em 1879 volta ao Brasil, eleito deputado geral por Pernambuco.

Principal líder parlamentar abolicionista, defende a abolição da escravatura na imprensa, provoca discussões na sociedade e pede audiência ao papa, na qual Leão XIII declara seu apoio à campanha antiescravagista. Viaja pela Europa de 1881 a 1884, quando é novamente eleito deputado. Luta contra a escravidão até a abolição, em 1888. Monarquista, com a proclamação da República deixa a política. Em 1891 ajuda a fundar o Jornal do Brasil, do qual é redator-chefe. Convidado pelo governo republicano, é encarregado de diversas missões diplomáticas e chefia a Embaixada Brasileira em Londres e em Washington, onde morre.

Como escritor, destaca-se por suas obras históricas, entre elas Balmaceda (1895) e Um Estadista do Império (1897-1899). Escreve a autobiografia Minha Formação (1900), um clássico da literatura brasileira.
