TRINDADE ISLAND -100 YEARS OF SOVEREIGNTY

Located 1000 kilometers east of Cabo Frio (RJ), the Trindade and Martin Vaz Islands were discovered in 1502 by Portuguese navigators, and, along with Brazil, became part of Portugal's ultramarine domain.

Many visitors have been there, but the most famous of them was the renowned English astronomer Edmund Halley, who had even taken over the Island on behalf of the British Monarchy.

in 1895, the English would venture again and try to take possession of this strategie position in the Atlantic. However, Brazilian diplomatic efforts, along with indispensable Portuguese support, have reinstated the Trindade Island to our country.

In order to clearly state our sovereingnty over the Island, a landmark was built on January 24,1897.

Nowadays, our presence is marked by a Brazilian Navy base, which stays on a permanent basis on the main island. Therefore, our sovereignty is insured, this preventing other eventual foreign adventures in that strategic point of the Brazilian territory.
