SÉRIE GEOLOGIAlDESENVOLVIMENTO SUSTENTÁVEL

HANNOVER2000

GEOLOGY/sustainable DEVELOPMENT SERIES     HANNOVER2000

Different geological themes have been recently focused in postage stamp issues of various countries, mostly displaying minerals, gerns, palaentological discoveries, ores, metallurgical processes, energy resources, natural monuments and, less frequently, the professional activities, scientific personalities and institutions devoted to research and education.

This block of stamps issued by the Brazilian Posts presents a didactic approach to the theme, emphasizing the relation between the fundaments of geological science and its most immediate sorts of application, directly related to sustainable development and to the improvement in the quality of human life.

The geological knowledge, besides being fundamental to meet modern society' s needs for raw materials, allows the conciliation of urban expansion and development with the environment.

Furthermore, almost 90% of modern life comfort depends, directly or indirectly, on lhe mineral kingdom; and consequently, on the geology study field. From lhe vehicle and its fuel (iron ore and petrol) to the silicongermanium computer chips, almost everything depends on nature's mineral resources and, by extension, on geology's fundaments and techniques, as in the example of brick houses, their internal structure, furniture, utensils, equipment and house gadgets.

Brazil's fantastic abundance in mineral resources was symbolized in this issue by gold, precious stones and gems (diamond, emerald, aquamarine, imperial topaz, bicolor turmaline and brazilianite - the latter being typically Brazilian, of a yellish green color- among others), remarkable icons of the natural richness of our country. For economic, technological and exclusivity reasons, this issue also portraits the niobium, a metallic chemical element utilized in the state-of-the-art technology industry, being Brazil its major producer and owner of 80% of its world reserve.

The 31 sI International Geologic Congress - lhe most traditional and important event in lhe Geosciences universe, which has been held since 1878 in many countries every four years, and which will be held for lhe first time in South America, in lhe city of Rio de Janeiro, from Aug. 6 to 17, 2000 - with lhe theme Geologyand Sustainable Development: Challenges for the Third Millenium, puts Brazil in evidence on lhe international geological scene. This event congregates today's most important scientists, members of more than 80 international scientific organizations connected to lhe International Union of Geological Sciences, besides gathering governmental authorities and representatives from more than 120 countries.

This issue also promotes lhe Expo Hannover 2000, a world exhibition that will gather professionals and business enterprises of severa! areas, organizations, associations, institutions and nations around lhe theme: "Humankind - Nature - Technology". With lhe purpose of demonstrating that lhe technological progress in today's world is irreversibly harming nature's balance, lhe event rises human awareness to lhe need of employing technology to restore and guarantee such balance.
