Barão do Rio Branco, político, diplomata e historiador fluminense (1845-1912). José Maria da Silva Paranhos Júnior é filho do visconde do Rio Branco, político de renome no Império. Nasce no Rio de Janeiro e forma-se em direito no Recife. Em 1869 elege-se deputado por Mato Grosso. Torna-se cônsul do Brasil em Liverpool, na Inglaterra, em 1876. Com a proclamação da República, assume a superintendência geral do Serviço de Emigração para o Brasil. Entre 1893 e 1900 é designado para resolver as disputas pelos territórios de Sete Povos das Missões - entre Brasil e Uruguai - e do Amapá . Assegura o domínio brasileiro nessas áreas e recebe o título de barão do Rio Branco (1888). Em 1902 é indicado para o Ministério das Relações Exteriores. Participa, ainda, da disputa pelo Acre com a Bolívia e de questões fronteiriças com Venezuela, Colômbia e outros países. Membro da Academia Brasileira de Letras, escreve vários livros sobre história do Brasil. Morre no Rio de Janeiro

 

Barão of Rio Branco was a politician, diplomat and historian fluminense (1845-1912). José Maria of Silva Paranhos Júnior is the viscount's from Rio Branco son, political of fame in the Empire. He was born in Rio de Janeiro and he received a law degree in Recife. In 1869 deputy is chosen in Mato Grosso. He becomes consul from Brazil in Liverpool, England, in 1876. With the proclamation of the Republic, it assumes the general superintendency of the Service of Emigration to Brazil. Between 1893 and 1900 he is designated to solve the disputes for the territories of Seven People of the Missions - between Brazil and Uruguay - and of Amapá.

He assures the Brazilian domain in those areas and it receives the baron's from Rio Branco title (1888). In 1902 he is appointed for the Ministry of the Exterio . He participates, still, of the dispute for Acre with Bolivia and of frontier subjects with Venezuela, Colombia and other countries.

Member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters, writes several books on history of Brazil. He died in Rio de Janeiro.
